Profile
Bio
In July 2021, Senator April Weaver was elected to serve Alabama’s 14th Senate District, which includes portions of Shelby, Bibb, and Chilton Counties. Prior to joining the Alabama Senate, she served for ten years in the Alabama House of Representatives, where she became the first woman appointed to chair the House Health Committee.
Senator Weaver was appointed by President Donald Trump to serve as Regional Director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for Region IV. As a Presidential Appointee, she provided executive leadership and was responsible for eight southeastern states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. In this role, she led intergovernmental and external affairs, bringing together federal, state, local, and tribal government organizations as well as private sector businesses. She also oversaw the region’s six federally recognized tribes.
As the lone female Republican in the Alabama Senate, Senator Weaver serves as Chairman of the Confirmations Committee, Vice Chair of the Fiscal Responsibility and Economic Development Committee, and Vice Chair of the Shelby County Legislative Delegation. She also serves on several other key committees including Health, Transportation and Energy, Finance and Taxation General Fund, and Judiciary and Rules.
A registered nurse with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Business Administration, Senator Weaver is the only nurse currently serving in the Alabama Legislature. She has dedicated more than 25 years to healthcare, working in both rural and urban hospitals and healthcare organizations in clinical and leadership capacities.
